ATLUTD signs Brad Guzan

Atlanta United added more U.S. National Team experience to its first MLS roster on Thursday, announcing the signing of goalkeeper Brad Guzan to a multi-year contract.

The move gives Atlanta a goalkeeper with Premier League experience, World Cup experience, and an MLS background. It also comes with a wait.

Guzan is still with Middlesbrough in England. Atlanta said he will join the club when the MLS Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 10, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate.

Atlanta acquired Guzan through MLS’s Allocation Process, using TAM ( Targeted Allocation Money ) to complete the deal. The club held the No. 1 spot in the Allocation Ranking Order after selecting that mechanism in the MLS Expansion Draft, and used it on one of the most experienced American goalkeepers available.

Brad is a proven Premier League and International goalkeeper and we're delighted that he's joining our Club. Once we made the decision to select the top pick in the allocation process, we were keen on acquiring him. We look forward to having him become an integral part of our team. Darren Eales, Atlanta United President

Guzan is set to return to MLS after a long run in England. He spent most of that time with Aston Villa before joining Middlesbrough ahead of the 2016-17 Premier League season. He also returns as a former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, having won the award with Chivas USA in 2007.

Guzan also brings extensive U.S. national team experience. He has 53 caps with the U.S. Men’s National Team and was part of the U.S. squads for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He also started for the United States during the 2016 Copa America Centenario.

The signing does not change Atlanta’s immediate goalkeeper picture. Alec Kann, Alex Tambakis, and SuperDraft pick Alex Kapp remain the goalkeepers in camp as the club prepares for its first preseason under Tata Martino. Atlanta will need one of them to handle the position through the first half of the season.

That also gives Guzan something to walk into when he arrives. If one of Atlanta’s current goalkeepers claims the job early, Guzan will join a team that already has an established starter in place.
