Atlanta United’s first trip to Yankee Stadium turned on two second-half minutes.

The expansion side reached halftime level with New York City FC after Carlos Carmona answered David Villa’s opener, but NYCFC struck twice after the break and handed Atlanta a 3-1 loss in the first meeting between the clubs.

Atlanta United arrived in the Bronx without Yamil Asad, who was serving a suspension from the MLS Disciplinary Committee. Tata Martino adjusted with Julian Gressel in the attacking midfield line, Miguel Almirón and Héctor Villalba wide, and Kenwyne Jones up top.

New York City scored first in the 16th minute. Rodney Wallace laid the ball back to David Villa, who carried it toward the top of the Atlanta penalty area and curled a shot beyond Alec Kann. The ball hit the woodwork before crossing the line, giving NYCFC the early lead.

Atlanta was behind, but one chance could still pull it level. The response came in the 38th minute from Carmona.

Tyrone Mears threw the ball into the box, Atlanta contested the first ball, and the second fell to Carmona. He hit it cleanly on the half-volley and drove it into the far corner past Sean Johnson. It was Carmona’s first goal of the season and it sent Atlanta into halftime level at 1-1.

The goal gave Atlanta a foothold. But NYCFC still looked dangerous when it moved through Villa, Wallace, and Maxi Moralez. Atlanta needed a cleaner start to the second half than it got.

2nd Half

NYCFC took the match back in the 59th minute. Ethan White sent a low ball into the area, Villa touched it on at the front post, and Wallace finished to make it 2-1.

Two minutes later, Wallace was involved again. He put a bouncing ball into Moralez’s path, and Moralez ran onto it and finished past Kann for NYCFC’s third.

Atlanta had spent the end of the first half working its way back into the match. By the 61st minute, Atlanta was chasing again, this time from two goals down.

Brandon Vázquez came on for Jeff Larentowicz in the 81st minute, giving Atlanta another forward for the final push. NYCFC had already taken the match where it wanted it. The home side could sit on the lead, keep Atlanta in front of it, and force hopeful balls into a crowded penalty area.

Atlanta had worked its way back once through Carmona. The second half did not give it the same opening. Villa, Wallace, and Moralez found the game’s decisive stretch, and Atlanta spent the rest of the afternoon trying to recover from it.

Closing Thoughts

Carmona’s goal sent Atlanta into halftime level, but NYCFC owned the stretch that decided the match. Villa opened the scoring, Wallace restored the lead, and Moralez made the final half hour feel like damage control.

You play in any sport and in any league, I don’t care what it is, you play on the road, and it’s going to be tough. The margin in the MLS is really small. I think we have held our own against the best, but today we lost to a better team Jeff Larentowicz, Atlanta United Defender - Post-game Press Conference

Larentowicz’s post-match words matched the afternoon. Atlanta had competed with good teams. In the Bronx, it ran into one that punished the mistakes Atlanta could not absorb.
