Starting Lineup

Loading lineup...

Brad Guzan was announced in January, but Atlanta United had to wait until the summer window to put him in goal. He arrived with Premier League and U.S. national team experience, the kind of signing made to raise the level which clearly has ambition.

Alec Kann had started Atlanta’s first 18 MLS matches and kept four clean sheets, so this was not a desperate change. Kann had helped carry an expansion team through the first half of its first season. Martino still made the switch in late July, away from home, in the first meeting with Orlando City.

All of this made the Orlando match more interesting. Changing goalkeepers in the middle of a playoff push touches more than the lineup. It is a big move. It changes the back line’s communication, distribution, defensive organization and locker-room hierarchy. And in this match, Guzan gave Atlanta the exact reason to make the move. He faced five shots on target, and saved all of them. A late goal from Villalba gave the team a 1-0 win.

1st Half

Atlanta entered the match without Josef Martínez, who was out with a right foot contusion. Julian Gressel came into the lineup, leaving Villalba, Almirón and Asad to carry more of the attacking load in front of Orlando’s back line.

Guzan’s Atlanta United debut began with Orlando trying to put the ball at Kaká’s feet. The Brazilian started underneath Giles Barnes, with Carlos Rivas giving Orlando speed in the attack. ATLUTD was forced back and forced to absorb pressure.

Atlanta had more of the ball through the first half and worked for openings around Orlando’s back line. The match stayed tight, with both teams breaking up passes and neither side turning its early possession into a goal. Kaká picked up the first card of the match in the 5th minute, and Leandro González Pírez followed with Atlanta’s first yellow in the 37th.

Orlando’s best chance came just before the 40th minute. The Lions sent a free kick into the box, and Jonathan Spector got his head to it. Guzan dropped quickly and made the save, keeping the match scoreless in the clearest Orlando chance of the half. It was the first real test of his Atlanta United debut.

Atlanta nearly took the lead in the 45th minute. Miguel Almirón played a weighted ball behind Orlando’s back line for Tito Villalba. Villalba carried the move forward and returned the ball to Almirón near the top of the box, but Almirón’s shot did not have enough on it to beat Joe Bendik.

The half ended 0-0. Atlanta had more possession and one late chance through Almirón and Villalba, while Orlando had forced Guzan into the bigger save.

2nd Half

The second half started without much separation. Orlando kept pushing through Kaká, while Atlanta found fewer clean attacking sequences than it had in the first half.

Gressel picked up Atlanta’s second yellow card in the 66th minute. Martino made his first change moments later, bringing Brandon Vázquez on for Gressel. With Josef Martínez unavailable, the move gave Atlanta another forward for the final stretch.

Orlando made an attacking change in the 71st minute, bringing on their leading scorer Cyle Larin for Giles Barnes. Atlanta responded with a defensive change six minutes later, replacing Yamil Asad with Chris McCann while the match remained 0-0.

The breakthrough came in the 86th minute against the run of play. The sequence started with a Garza throw-in to Villalba. Tito received it and cut towards the middle as Orlando gave him room. From about 30 yards, he took a crack, and sent the ball into the top-right corner.

Atlanta had the 1-0 lead.

Both teams then went to the bench. Orlando brought on Richie Laryea for Antonio Nocerino in the 88th minute and Luis Gil for Cristian Higuita in the 89th, trying to rescue a point at home. Atlanta used its final change in between, replacing Villalba with Mikey Ambrose to defend the lead.

We didn't manage the game well at the end of the game. I think that’s when we needed to have control of the possession most in this game and we weren’t able to do it. We allowed them to get some good chances on goal so I think that’s something we need to work on, managing the last couple of minutes. The whistle came with Atlanta still in front, and Villalba’s strike stood as the only goal in a 1-0 win.

Closing Thoughts

The first impression of Guzan in an Atlanta shirt was easy to hear. He was loud, direct and constantly organizing the players in front of him. Atlanta had changed goalkeepers in the middle of its first playoff push, and Guzan’s debut showed what that move was supposed to add beyond saves.

Orlando finished with 13 shots, five on target and six corners. Guzan saved everything Orlando put on frame, including Spector’s header in the first half, and gave Atlanta the clean sheet.

Atlanta finished with eight shots and six on target, but the match did not look like a comfortable attacking performance. Martino said Atlanta played a better first half, controlled possession and created chances, then had fewer chances after halftime. That matched the way the game finished. Orlando pushed late, Atlanta protected the box, and Villalba’s strike arrived against the run of play.

I thought we played a good first half. We controlled possession and we had some chances to score. I don't think we played as well on the second half. We didn't have as many chances, we scored a great goal but it was out of context of how that half went and I don’t think we really deserved it at that point. Bendik gave Orlando a chance to take something from the match. He saved Almirón’s first-half chance and finished with five saves, but Villalba gave him a shot he could not reach.

Orlando created enough to make Guzan work and left with reason to feel it had missed an opportunity at home. Atlanta did not have Josef Martínez, did not control the second half the way it wanted, and still left with three points. Villalba supplied the goal. Guzan made it stand.
