The search for a midfield anchor in Atlanta has finally crossed the finish line as Atlanta United announces the signing of midfielder Matías Galarza.

He will be on loan from River Plate. However, the loan is only through June 30, 2026. Atlanta therefore have a short runway to evaluate him in competitive matches before deciding whether to trigger a permanent move by this summer.

Galarza will occupy an international roster slot and is pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 visa.

Matías is a talented young player who will add energy and intensity to our midfield. At 24 years old, he’s played in multiple big games in South America at both the club and international level, recently helping Paraguay qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We’re excited to welcome him to Atlanta. Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson

The Slisz-Shaped Hole

Since the departure of Bartosz Slisz in early January, Atlanta’s midfield has felt untethered. Slisz provided a specific, blue collar utility - high volume ball recovery and a central shield that allowed the more creative pieces to flourish. Without that anchor, the team has struggled to control transitions.

Galarza arrives with a remarkably similar profile. Across 151 professional appearances in the top flights of Argentina and Brazil, he has earned a reputation for “energy and intensity,” as noted by Chris Henderson. He is not a high-volume playmaker - 6 career assists in 150+ games suggests as much - but he is the player who wins the ball to start the sequence.

Freeing Tomás Jacob

The most immediate impact of this signing isn’t just Galarza himself, but how it reshapes the rest of the XI. This move should allow Tomás Jacob to return to his natural home at right fullback. Jacob has been filling gaps centrally out of necessity, but with Galarza providing the defensive midfield role, the backline should regain its intended shape.

For a Tata Martino system, having a left-footed defensive midfielder also changes the passing angles significantly when playing out of the back. When Galarza drops between the centerbacks to build play, his natural orientation opens wider distribution channels that a right-footed player often misses.

Experience in the Big Moments

Galarza’s arrival carries a weight that standard mid-season loans usually don’t. While he is only 24, he was a central figure in Paraguay’s return to the global stage. On September 9, 2025, in the final match of CONMEBOL qualifying, Galarza came off the bench in Lima and scored the 78th-minute winner against Peru.

That single goal broke a 16-year drought, securing Paraguay’s spot in the 2026 World Cup. After the match, Galarza’s focus remained on the collective effort:

South American qualifying demands a specific type of defensive discipline - staying compact under pressure and winning second balls in hostile stadiums. Henderson’s emphasis on “big games” refers to this: Atlanta has signed a player who has already performed when the margin for error is thin.

Immediate Outlook

Galarza was not signed for depth. The departure of Slisz created a vacancy that requires a natural ball-winner, and Galarza’s arrival is the most direct attempt to address that gap. He is expected to occupy the starting role as soon as he is cleared to play.

Establishing a consistent shield in front of the centerbacks allows the rest of the defensive rotation to fall into place. With a loan expiring on June 30, the front office has a clear window to evaluate how his presence stabilizes central transitions. This is an acquisition betting that restoring discipline in the midfield will finally allow the team to control matches.
