Atlanta United 2 generates higher-quality chances in the box than Chicago Fire II in their 3-0 win

ATLUTD 2 took 21 shots and placed 8 on target, while Chicago took 15 shots with 2 on target. That gap shows how often each team turned attempts into actions that required a save. Chicago recorded 10 shots inside the box but did not convert any of them, which places the difference in execution rather than access to the penalty area.

1st Half

Atlanta took the lead in the 4th minute when Arif Kovac scored from close range, finishing a central action early in the match. That goal placed Atlanta ahead before either side had established sustained attacking sequences. In the 30th, Dominik Chong-Qui had a left-footed attempt from outside the box blocked. Mohamed Cisset followed with a miss from the left half-space, again finishing outside the area. Chicago’s first central-box action came in the 40th minute, when Milan Napoe’s left-footed shot from the center of the box was blocked by Matthew Senanou. The sequence continued with a corner, but it ended without forcing a save, matching earlier attacks that never carried through to the goalkeeper.

Cameron Dunbar ( Photo by ATLUTD )

Atlanta extended the lead in the 36th minute when Ignacio Suarez-Couri delivered into the center of the box and Cameron Dunbar finished first time with his right. Dunbar played the full 90 and scored once on three shots, with all three attempts coming from inside the box and all three on target, so each touch in that space carried the attack through to a finish. He used both feet across those attempts, which shows he finished plays without needing an extra touch to adjust. He has now scored in consecutive matches from central areas. Chicago committed fouls across these sequences, which stopped play before second actions could develop and prevented those entries from building into sustained pressure.

2nd Half

Atlanta forced two saves in the 48th minute. Enzo Dovlo’s left-footed shot from the right half-space outside the box was pushed away, and Cameron Dunbar followed with a left-footed attempt from the center of the box that was also saved. Those actions moved Atlanta’s attacks from blocked or missed attempts into sequences that required a goalkeeping response. Atlanta added a third goal in the 84th minute when Adrian Gill finished with a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, with Ignacio Suarez-Couri providing the assist and Moises Tablante the second assist. Chicago produced its clearest sequence in the 88th minute, when Jack Sandmeyer struck the right post from the center of the box and Mateo Clark followed with a right-footed shot from the same area that went wide. Both actions came from central positions within the same phase but ended without a goal. A late yellow card to Clark in stoppage time followed shortly after, which halted play without extending the attack.
