At West Bromwich Albion, the American defender has become the competitive core of a team that refused to go down.

Stepping Up: George Campbell’s Trial by Fire in the Championship

A long-range thunderbolt at Bramall Lane sparked a 10-match unbeaten run and won Goal of the Season. But George Campbell's true impact for West Brom was stabilizing a back line under intense pressure.

The Sky Bet Championship season is over at West Bromwich Albion. Survival secured. Another year in England’s second division confirmed after a spring spent fighting to stay clear of the bottom three.

One of the moments now most associated with that survival came from George Campbell.

His long-range strike against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane has been voted West Bromwich Albion’s Ideal Heating Men’s 2025/26 Goal of the Season by supporters. Campbell stepped onto a loose ball outside the box and drove a shot past the goalkeeper to earn West Brom a point away from home. The result became the beginning of the ten-match unbeaten run that ultimately secured Championship safety.

The club later highlighted the Sheffield United goal while announcing the supporter vote for Goal of the Season.

The American defender picked up a loose ball and thundered home a terrific shot from distance to earn James Morrison's side a point at Bramall Lane - an effort which sparked the ten-match unbeaten run that helped the Baggies secure their Sky Bet Championship status. Campbell’s performances across March and April have also been viewed internally as an important part of that turnaround. As the season wore on, he handled increasingly difficult physical matchups, won second balls consistently, and helped stabilize a back line that had spent much of the winter under pressure.

A source within West Bromwich Albion’s football operation described Campbell as “a fans’ favourite” and said the coaching staff have been pleased both with his performances and with how quickly he adapted to the Championship.

That stretch of form also brought individual recognition. Campbell was nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award in March after a run of performances that combined defensive stability with growing attacking involvement on set pieces and second phases around the box.

Interim Head Coach James Morrison later praised Campbell following another important result during West Brom’s survival run.

He's really stepped to his job. I’m really pleased for him. He’s played a a season and a half again, already and stepping into a new position, new partnership. Stepping up, scoring goals. His overall performance today was at a high level. James Morrison, Interim Head Coach - Postmatch press conference, March 21, 2026

Morrison’s comments pointed less toward the goal itself than toward the broader responsibility Campbell had taken on late in the season. West Brom relied heavily on defensive stability during the unbeaten run, and Campbell’s role inside that structure grew as the pressure around the relegation fight increased.

With the season over, players quickly dispersed for the offseason break. Campbell is already away on vacation and is not expected back until preseason begins in July.

For Atlanta United, Campbell’s rise at West Brom traces nearly the full pathway the club originally envisioned for its first generation of Homegrown players.

He entered the academy as a teenager, progressed through ATLUTD2, signed a Homegrown contract, established himself in MLS, and later moved to CF Montréal before transferring to England.

By the time West Brom signed him, Campbell had already accumulated more than 100 professional appearances along with senior international experience with the USMNT.

For Atlanta United, Campbell has become one of the clearest demonstrations that the academy pathway can produce not only MLS contributors, but exportable defenders capable of contributing, and thriving, inside one of football’s most physically demanding leagues.
