Atlanta United 2 earned a 3-0 win over Chicago Fire FC II on Saturday at Turner Soccer Complex in Athens, with all three goals coming in the second half. Arif Kovac opened the scoring in the 54th minute, Enzo Dovlo added the second in stoppage time, and Santiago Pita finished the match with Atlanta’s third goal shortly after.

The result included several notable individual and roster moments. Kovac scored his league-leading ninth goal of the season, Pita recorded his first goal and first assist of the season, and both Pita and Toto Majub returned from injuries sustained in April. U-18 Academy players Amir Henry and Andrew Jardines also made their first professional starts, while a season-high seven Academy players were part of the ATL UTD 2 matchday roster.

The first real chance of the match came in the 27th minute. Milan Napoe received a lofted through ball from Mateo Clark deep in Chicago’s half, used his pace to beat Mohamed Cisset, and went one-on-one with James Donaldson near the top of the box. Napoe aimed toward the bottom-left corner, but Donaldson reacted quickly and parried the shot away.

Atlanta had a blocked look in the 31st minute when Patrick Weah’s left-footed shot from the right side of the box was blocked by Arif Kovac, and Kovac was then caught offside moments later.

Kovac created Atlanta’s best chance of the half in the 42nd minute. After receiving a pass just outside the Chicago box while surrounded by four defenders, he turned sharply into the left side of the penalty area and hit a powerful left-footed shot that rose narrowly over the crossbar.

The first card of the match came in first-half stoppage time. Tidiane Diawara was shown yellow for a foul on Matthew Senanou.

The half ended with Atlanta United 2 and Chicago Fire FC II level at 0-0.

2nd Half

Atlanta made two halftime substitutions, with Santiago Pita replacing Amir Henry and Enzo Dovlo replacing Patrick Weah. Dovlo was caught offside in the 47th minute, and Pita forced Jason Nemo Jr. into a save from the right side of the box later in the same minute.

Chicago had a chance early in the half from a corner. Hugo Berg met a lofted cross with a header from the center of the box, but Donaldson made a fingertip save to keep the match level.

Atlanta took the lead in the 54th minute. Pita delivered a left-footed cross from the right corner flag to the back post, Cisset redirected the ball across goal with his chest, and Kovac finished from close range into the roof of the net.

D.D. Sibrian was shown Atlanta’s only yellow card in the 56th minute after fouling Napoe. Chicago then made its first change in the 59th minute, bringing on Damyan Villanueva for Diawara, and Atlanta later brought on Damola Browne for Sibrian in the 62nd minute.

Both teams made additional changes as the half moved on. Chicago brought on Brody Williams for Mateo Clark in the 72nd minute, while Atlanta replaced Kovac with Liam Butts in the 76th minute and Cameron Dunbar with Toto Majub in the 80th minute. Chicago’s final substitution came in the 89th minute, when Christopher Morales replaced Dean Boltz.

Chicago received two more yellow cards in the final stretch. Brody Williams was booked in the 78th minute, and Milan Napoe was booked in the 85th minute after fouling Majub. Pita also had a right-footed shot saved by Nemo in the 85th minute.

Atlanta added its second goal in the stoppage. Pita won a ground duel, the ball landed at Dovlo’s feet near midfield, and Dovlo beat one defender before going through on goal and finishing with a left-footed shot.

Atlanta scored again 10 seconds after the ensuing kickoff. Butts pounced on a loose touch from Berg and played a first-time pass to Pita, who ran through on goal and finished past Nemo to make it 3-0 in the 94th minute.

Silva on the Game

Speaking post-match, ATLUTD2 head coach Jose Silva said the shape was driven by both availability and matchup. With several players away on international duty, Atlanta adjusted into a 3-4-3 that fit the personnel available and the way the opponent played.

Silva framed the absences as both a challenge and an opportunity. The missing players opened minutes for younger players, and the response gave the staff another look at the internal competition inside the group. He credited the academy and second-team environment for helping keep players ready, while also saying the standard has to keep rising.

Andrew Jardines was one of the players Silva highlighted. Silva said Jardines began the season lower on the depth chart but has pushed himself closer to a larger role.

We are really happy with [Andrew Jardines]. At the beginning of the season, there are three roles. You can be the backup, you can be the bench player, you can be the starter. He started as a backup, as a [third option], and now he is up there trying to push for the starting position. Jose Silva, ATLUTD2 Head Coach - Post-Match Press Conference

Silva still pointed to a sharper edge Atlanta needs to find. He said the team has shown its identity, but it has to add more consistency and a stronger will to win from the opening minute. Even in a positive result, he noted that Atlanta became too relaxed in some first-half moments and allowed chances that could have changed the game.

Closing Thoughts

ATLUTD2’s 3-0 win came from a second half that changed as soon as Santiago Pita entered the match. After a scoreless first half, Pita helped create the opener from a corner in the 54th minute, assisted Enzo Dovlo’s goal in stoppage time, then scored Atlanta’s third goal moments later.

James Donaldson’s saves kept the match scoreless long enough for Atlanta’s attack to take over in the second half. Chicago had chances to change the match, including Milan Napoe’s one-on-one look in the first half and Hugo Berg’s header early in the second, but Donaldson kept both out.

That made the night more than a late scoring burst. Atlanta got goals from Kovac, Dovlo, and Pita; a clean sheet from Donaldson and the back line; first professional starts for Amir Henry and Andrew Jardines; and return-from-injury appearances from Pita and Toto Majub. The match stayed close for more than 50 minutes, but Atlanta’s second-half substitutions and stoppage-time finishing turned it into a clear 3-0 result.
