Atlanta United Signs Paraguayan Defender Júnior Alonso

Atlanta United has added a veteran piece to its back line.

The club announced Monday that it has signed Paraguayan center back Júnior Alonso from Atlético Mineiro. The deal gives Atlanta a left-footed defender with extensive experience in South America, Europe, and the Paraguayan national team setup.

Alonso joins on a free transfer under a contract through the 2028-29 season. He will occupy an international roster spot, pending receipt of his ITC and P-1 Visa.

Alonso arrives at a clear position of need. Juan Berrocal’s loan from Getafe ended before the World Cup, leaving Atlanta with another opening in central defense as the club prepares for its post-break return to play. Berrocal made 19 MLS appearances and 13 starts across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

The 33-year-old has played in Paraguay, France, Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Russia. He has also made 76 appearances for Paraguay and played in five matches as the national team advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That need has been obvious. Atlanta has spent much of the season searching for defensive certainty, and the center back group has shifted around Stian Gregersen without finding a consistent answer. Alonso gives Atlanta another experienced option, and his left-footed profile could help balance a back line that has needed cleaner distribution from deeper areas.

At club level, Alonso is most closely associated with Atlético Mineiro. He returned to the Brazilian club in 2024 and became the foreign player with the most appearances in club history, playing 240 matches across three stints. His time there included major honors, including the Campeonato Brasileiro, Copa do Brasil, and multiple Campeonato Mineiro titles.

His arrival is another part of Atlanta’s wider summer roster work. The club entered the break needing more than one answer, but central defense was one of the areas where movement appeared unavoidable after Berrocal’s departure.

Alonso brings experience, national-team pedigree and a defined positional profile. Those qualities still have to translate into MLS, where center backs are regularly asked to defend open space, manage transition moments and withstand the travel and tempo of the league.

For Atlanta, this is a veteran bet at a position that needed one. Alonso gives the club another option in central defense, another left-footed presence, and another sign that the summer window is being used to reshape a roster that entered the break needing change.
