Fifteen Shots, No Goals for ATLUTD2 in 2-0 loss to Huntsville

Atlanta United 2 had already made Huntsville City FC suffer twice this season, outscoring them 10-3 between those meetings. Arif Kovac scored five himself in May as Huntsville finished with nine players.

Huntsville entered this game without a win in eight, a run that had started with that 6-2 loss to Atlanta. Atlanta arrived looking for a third consecutive victory and a club-record 10th win of the season.

Weather delayed kickoff by nearly an hour at Wicks Family Field, but once the teams finally took the field, Atlanta again spent most of the opening half in Huntsville’s end. Atlanta kept the ball, won corners and repeatedly worked back towards the penalty area, but Huntsville crowded the shooting lanes and prevented anything from reaching goalkeeper Xavier Valdez.

The game flipped in favor of the hosts after the half. Huntsville began getting runners behind Atlanta after halftime. Maximus Ekk and substitute Malachi Molina scored, giving Huntsville a 2-0 win and ending its eight-match winless run.

1st Half

Dominik Chong Qui got forward early and took Atlanta’s first shot in the fourth minute, but Leo Christiano stepped in front of it.

Atlanta kept returning to the left side, with Chong Qui pushing beyond midfield and Cameron Dunbar working ahead of him. On the opposite side, Daniel Chica also moved high when Atlanta had the ball, leaving Adrian Gill and Andrew Jardines to circulate possession underneath.

Huntsville stayed compact around its own box and waited for chances to break through Maximus Ekk. Those moments were brief. Most of the play kept retreating towards goal. Their goal was to bunker and frustrate ATLUTD2.

Around the 18th minute, Atlanta worked another move down the left and worked the ball back into the middle. Jardines found room to shoot, but pulled the effort wide.

The game became more physical through the middle of the half. A series of hard challenges brought players together, and the referee had to step in before play could resume. Jardines was booked in the 29th minute. Moises Veliz was shown a yellow later in the half.

Atlanta continued probing, but Huntsville kept getting bodies in the way. Gill tried from distance and had his shot blocked. Dunbar found another opening late in the half, only for his effort to take a deflection and go over the bar.

By the 37th minute, Atlanta had roughly 70 percent of the possession, but neither side had put a shot on target.

Atlanta finished the half with seven shots and five corners. Huntsville had taken only two shots. The score remained 0-0.

2nd Half

Atlanta came out of halftime and immediately put a dangerous ball across goal, forcing Xavier Valdez to reach up and tip it away for a corner.

Huntsville then created its first clear chance of the night. Nick Pariano combined with Leo Christiano, sending the left back into the center of the box, where Jonathan Ransom saved his left-footed shot.

A few minutes later, Huntsville was through again. Aiden Jarvis sent a long ball from deep in his own half towards Yoshizawa. Dominik Chong Qui reached it first, but mishandled the ball, sending it to Yoshizawa just outside the box. That mistake left Huntsville in a 2-v-1 against Jonathan Ransom. Senanou made a last-ditch attempt to stop Yoshizawa, but Yoshizawa passed across to Ekk, who finished into the open net.

Atlanta tried to respond through Suarez-Couri, who found space inside the box but had his shot blocked. Around the hour mark, Atlanta worked a short corner back into the area, where the resulting header was knocked down before it could reach Valdez. Ekk got behind Atlanta again in the 63rd minute, forcing Ransom into another save from the center of the box.

Santiago Pita replaced Suarez-Couri for Atlanta, while Huntsville introduced Zidane Yáñez and Malachi Molina.

Six minutes later, Yoshizawa won a header near midfield and flicked the ball back to Yáñez. Molina was already breaking through the middle with Daniel Chica trying to stay with him. Yáñez bent the pass into Molina’s run. Molina reached it first, carried the ball towards Ransom and then chipped the oncoming keeper for the 70th-minute goal to put Huntsville up by 2.

Enzo Dovlo had an effort deflected away, and Liam Butts later found space but sent his shot wide. Atlanta reached 10 shots with 15 minutes still remaining, but had not put any on target. Huntsville repeatedly closed down shooters and blocked attempts in and around the box.

Cameron Dunbar came closest in stoppage time, cutting inside and curling a right-footed shot just past the far post. Another Atlanta attempt was blocked moments later.

Daniel Chica was booked on one of the final actions of the match. After the final whistle, pushing and shoving broke out before Matthew Senanou shoved Moises Veliz and was shown a straight red, leaving him suspended for Atlanta’s next match.

With that, Huntsville ended its eight-match winless run with a 2-0 victory.

Closing Thoughts

Atlanta finished with 15 shots and did not put one on target. Huntsville blocked 10 of Atlanta’s 15 attempts, repeatedly closing down shooters around the box. Atlanta did not put a single shot on target, leaving Valdez without a save to make.

Arif Kovac scored five times against Huntsville in May. This time, Huntsville kept him quiet and denied Atlanta the central spaces that had been so damaging in the previous meeting.

Atlanta’s possession and passing dictated most of the first half, but Huntsville changed the game after halftime. The hosts began getting behind Atlanta’s back line, forced Ransom into two saves and scored twice. Atlanta continued to have the ball and take shots, but never put one on target.

For Atlanta, it was a reminder that possession and shot volume mean very little when none of it becomes a real threat.
