Atlanta Survives Minnesota With Hoyos Heroics

Atlanta United looked hungry from the opening whistle Wednesday night. The Five Stripes pressed high, chased every loose ball and gave their players the freedom to roam well beyond the positions shown on the lineup graphic.

Then the match began moving faster than Atlanta could manage.

Minnesota United repeatedly sent the ball over Atlanta’s high defensive line, pulled the visitors from side to side and turned the first half into a frantic chase. Tomás Jacob found a goal before halftime. Tristan Muyumba added another after Minnesota equalized, and Lucas Hoyos survived the final assault to drag Atlanta out of Allianz Field with a 2-1 victory.

The final whistle brought boos from a crowd that had gathered to celebrate Minnesota United’s 10th season. Atlanta had been outshot, forced backwards and left looking desperate for long stretches. It had also won for the second time in five days.

1st Half

Atlanta pressed Minnesota from the opening whistle. The defensive line pushed past midfield, and quickly attacked every ball. Gregersen even stepped beyond the center circle to challenge for the ball. Minnesota dealt with the pressure by going over it. A long pass in the 10th minute forced Hoyos nearly 30 yards from his goal. He calmly controlled the ball outside the penalty area and cleared it. The play worked, but seeing him that far from an empty net was still unnerving.

Another ball sailed over Atlanta’s defense two minutes later. Caldeira reached it before Gregersen could recover, avoided an attempted tackle and turned towards the box. He drove the ball across the six-yard line, but no Minnesota player made the run needed to meet it.

Boxall launched a long throw into Atlanta’s penalty box in the 17th minute. Duggan flicked it across the six. Markanich arrived at the back post and headed towards goal. Hoyos just managed to paw the ball away, then pounced on it before Minnesota could reach the rebound.

Atlanta’s opening pressure had disappeared by the middle of the half. Minnesota found success by repeatedly switching the direction of play. Atlanta did not press from side to side, remaining central and deep.

Chancalay nearly punished Atlanta in the 26th minute. Minnesota worked the ball down the right and found him inside the penalty area, where he blasted over the crossbar. The assistant referee raised his flag, although Chancalay appeared to have timed his run correctly.

arkanich rose inside the box in the 29th minute and headed another long delivery just over the crossbar. Atlanta had spent most of the previous 15 minutes retreating towards its own goal. The match had become frantic. Atlanta chased the ball from one side to the other, cleared it and found Minnesota coming straight back. The players wanted to slow everything down, but Minnesota kept dragging them into another sprint and another hurried defensive decision.

Picault finally carried the ball away from Atlanta’s goal. He received it near the center circle, turned and tried to accelerate into the open field. Boxall knocked him down before he could escape, earning a yellow card and giving Atlanta a moment to breathe.

Almirón made a nifty steal of the ball near Atlanta’s penalty area in the 32nd minute and took off up the pitch. Pereyra slid hard into his path, sending Almirón to the ground. It was difficult to tell whether the challenge caught him or Almirón sold the contact, but the referee ended up giving Pereyra a yellow card.

Minnesota slipped another through ball behind Atlanta’s defense in the 35th minute. Chancalay ran beyond Alonso and hit a rocket into the side netting. Atlanta survived with another narrow escape.

Atlanta had begun moving the ball better by the 37th minute, but couldn’t get past Minnesota in the final third. Almirón took a corner from the left, and Muyumba collected the ball outside the penalty area. He tried a quick shot, but Markanich was there. The ball flew wide towards Jacob on the right side of the box. Jacob took a heavy first touch. But no Minnesota defender was close enough. He had just enough time to reach the bouncing ball and strike it cleanly. The shot curled across Callender and into the far side of the net for his second goal of the season.

Jacob, Atlanta’s right back, struck with the confidence of a forward and gave the Five Stripes a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

Atlanta’s players continued roaming from their listed positions after the goal. The team had no discernible shape, but that appeared intentional. Players exchanged positions freely as they looked for space and the ball.

The game remained frantic. Both teams misplaced passes, rushed into challenges, and struggled to create anything from the chaos. The first half seemed to race towards stoppage time.

Minnesota nearly equalized in stoppage time. A corner carried through the crowd inside the penalty area. Hoyos got a hand to the corner but could not clear it, leaving Chancalay open at the back post. Chancalay beat Hoyos with the shot but sent it just wide.

The halftime whistle blew with Atlanta still leading.

2nd Half

Minnesota started the half by pushing through Atlanta’s midfield. Gill stopped the first break with a foul and received a yellow card in the 46th minute.

Atlanta found an opening a few minutes later. Miranchuk threaded a pass behind Minnesota’s back line, and Almirón surged onto it with only Callender in front of him. Almirón fired with his left foot, but Callender stuck out a leg and blocked the shot. It was a fantastic save to keep the game close.

Minnesota kept attacking, forcing Atlanta into desperate defending. Pereyra sent a corner into the box in the 52nd minute. Gregersen powered an attempted clearance against Atlanta’s crossbar. Hoyos grabbed the ball before anyone could react. Several Atlanta players looked aghast as they turned and saw how close the ball had come to going in.

Minnesota crossed into the box again moments later, and Markanich headed another ball over the crossbar. Atlanta was defending desperately now. The Five Stripes could clear the first ball, but Minnesota kept sending it right back.

Pereyra made a good run and got past Sanchez. Cooper grabbed and held onto him to stop the run. Sanchez received a yellow card for the foul.

The resulting free kick plunged Atlanta’s penalty box into chaos. The ball pinballed through several players before Duggan headed it against the crossbar. Markanich waited near the goal line and nodded the rebound past Picault. The assistant referee raised the flag. But Atlanta’s relief lasted only until referee Joshua Encarnacion overruled him and awarded the goal. Minnesota had its equalizer in the 58th minute.

Atlanta’s energy had dropped, and several players looked gassed as Minnesota controlled the ball. Martino prepared Brennan in the 63rd minute, then introduced him alongside Alzate. Picault and Sanchez came off.

Gill was making some fantastic plays in the middle, and kept finding ways to disrupt Minnesota’s pressure. He fought through another challenge in midfield, then made his biggest intervention in the 72nd minute. Minnesota broke forward with three attackers against Gill alone, but he made a tremendous sliding tackle to end the attack.

Then the match turned contentious. Báez prepared to kick the ball following a throw-in when Chancalay slid studs-first into his leg. Chancalay received a yellow card, but the replay made the challenge look worthy of a red. Both teams answered one physical challenge with another, resulting in several bodies hitting the turf.

Minnesota broke through the Atlanta back line again in the 78th. Dieng ran free towards goal with only Hoyos left between him and the net. Hoyos charged outside his penalty area but did not throw himself at Dieng’s feet as expected. He instead stood tall, waited for Dieng to make his move, made a quick fake then stuck out a leg to steal the ball. It was a fantastic bit of play.

Atlanta turned and ran in a coordinated attack. Alzate launched the ball up the right, and Jacob raced onto it before sending it towards Miranchuk in the center. Miranchuk touched the ball into Muyumba’s path. Muyumba shaped as if he would shoot towards the right. The fake gave him enough space to move the ball onto his left foot, and he drove it into the upper-left corner.

Martino replaced Miranchuk with Edwards after the goal. Minnesota went straight back towards Atlanta’s penalty area, driving the ball into the center of the box for Yeboah, who had just entered the match. eboah struck it from close range, but Hoyos made a huge save. The rebound pinballed through the crowd as Hoyos scrambled in front of his goal. Markanich hammered the ball back towards net, and Hoyos somehow kept that one out too.

Martino parked the bus in the 84th minute. He replaced Gill and Muyumba with center backs Mihaj and Díaz, giving Díaz his Atlanta United debut and putting four center backs on the field. Edwards stripped the ball away and cleared it, then Mihaj dealt with another delivery as Atlanta crowded the area around Hoyos.

González headed another Minnesota corner over the crossbar. The fourth official then showed four minutes of stoppage time.

Almirón emerged from a scramble near midfield in the 92nd minute and sent Brennan towards the corner instead of forcing another attack. Alzate held the ball there on Atlanta’s next possession, shielding it from Minnesota and taking more time off the clock.

Minnesota created one final chance near the top of the penalty area, but González sent the shot well over the crossbar. The whistle blew, and boos rolled down from the Allianz Field crowd.

Closing Thoughts

Minnesota finished with 53 percent possession, a 13-10 advantage in shots and 2.0 expected goals to Atlanta’s 0.93. The Loons put four shots on target, struck the crossbar twice and spent much of the second half forcing Atlanta deeper.

Hoyos’ three official saves undersell a performance that included several decisions outside the traditional goalkeeper statistics. He was aggressive, occasionally nerve-racking and ultimately decisive. No Atlanta player had a greater influence on the result.

Gill’s ability to read the game stood out during his second MLS start. The 19-year-old recognized danger early, moved into useful spaces and understood when he needed to protect the ball under pressure. He also saw difficult passes that many players would not attempt. Not every idea worked, but he looked sharper and more confident than he had during portions of his time with Atlanta United 2.

Muyumba has now scored in three consecutive matches and has four goals this season. His two most recent goals came when he was allowed to leave his deeper midfield position and move closer to the penalty area. Atlanta is getting more from his energy when he has the freedom to push up the pitch.

Atlanta remains last in the Eastern Conference. Even so, the Five Stripes have won two consecutive matches, a run that felt almost impossible before the World Cup break.

Atlanta returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 23, to face Sporting Kansas City at 7 p.m. with an opportunity to make it three in a row.
