Atlanta United Signs World Cup Striker Breel Embolo

Atlanta United announced the signing of Switzerland international forward Breel Embolo from French Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais on Sunday. Embolo signed a contract through the 2029-30 season and will occupy Designated Player and international roster spots.

He will not be immediately available as he awaits receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 Visa.

The 29-year-old arrives in Atlanta following a summer in which he helped Switzerland reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Embolo scored twice and added two assists during the tournament and joins Atlanta with 92 appearances and 26 goals for Switzerland.

His signing completes Atlanta’s search for a DP-level striker following Emmanuel Latte Lath’s loan to Union Berlin earlier in August.

Reports of Atlanta’s pursuit of Embolo first emerged Aug. 14, with French newspaper L’Equipe reporting that Rennes and Atlanta were discussing a transfer worth approximately €17 million, with another €1 million available in bonuses.

The move gives Atlanta a striker with more than a decade of experience in the top levels of European and international soccer.

From Basel to Rennes

Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Embolo moved to Switzerland as a child and developed in FC Basel’s academy. He made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in 2014, getting his first professional goal four minutes after entering a league match against Aarau.

Embolo quickly became one of Switzerland’s most prominent young players. He won three consecutive Swiss Super League titles with Basel and was named the league’s Player of the Year in 2015. He finished his time with the club with 31 goals and 21 assists in 90 appearances across all competitions.

Schalke 04 brought him to the Bundesliga in 2016. His first season in Germany was cut short by a serious ankle and leg injury in October, beginning a recovery that kept him out for approximately nine months.

He remained at Schalke through 2019 before moving to Borussia Mönchengladbach, where his role began to evolve. Embolo could lead the line, play underneath another striker or drop away from the center backs to receive the ball and bring teammates into the attack.

After six seasons in Germany, Embolo joined AS Monaco in 2022. He scored 14 goals across all competitions during his first season in France before another major injury interrupted his career. Embolo tore the ACL in his right knee during an August 2023 training session and did not return to competitive action until the following April.

His return eventually led back into Switzerland’s national team and then into another full season with Monaco. Embolo made 41 appearances for the club during the 2024-25 season, including 10 in the UEFA Champions League.

Rennes signed him to a four-year contract in September 2025.

He spent only one season at Rennes, scoring 10 goals across all competitions. Eight of those goals came in Ligue 1, where he added three assists in 31 appearances and 20 starts. His playing time declined toward the end of the season as Rennes increasingly used Estéban Lepaul at center forward in a 4-3-3. L’Equipe reported that Embolo and the club had already agreed he would consider offers after the World Cup.

International Football

Embolo made his senior Switzerland debut in March 2015, shortly after his 18th birthday. Cameroon had also pursued him internationally, but Embolo chose the country where he had grown up and developed as a player.

He has since represented Switzerland at three World Cups and multiple European Championships.

One of the defining moments of his international career came at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Switzerland opened the tournament against Cameroon, Embolo’s country of birth. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 Switzerland victory and raised his hands rather than celebrating against the country where he was born.

Four years later, Embolo remained an important part of Switzerland’s attack.

Embolo started all six of Switzerland’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring twice and assisting two more goals as the team advanced to the quarterfinals.

Embolo returned to Rennes in August with 92 international appearances and 26 goals before Atlanta made its move.

What Embolo Brings to Atlanta

Embolo joins Atlanta with 380 professional appearances, 100 goals and 66 assists across the top divisions in Switzerland, Germany and France. He has also made 30 UEFA Champions League appearances and 27 in the Europa League.

Both Atlanta and Rennes have emphasized Embolo’s ability to contribute beyond his finishing. At 6-foot-2, Embolo can play through contact and receive with a defender behind him. He has said that he played as an attacking midfielder and second striker when he was younger before gradually moving farther forward, developing into a center forward who can protect the ball and connect with teammates around him.

That ability could give Tata Martino another way to connect Atlanta’s attack. Embolo can occupy center backs near the penalty area, but he can also drop toward the ball, protect it and combine with teammates moving around him.

Latte Lath’s departure opened a Designated Player position and removed Atlanta’s primary outlet. Rather than replace him with another striker built predominantly around running beyond the back line, Atlanta has added a player whose game has developed around physical duels, combination play and occupying defenders.

Embolo also arrives with considerably more experience than most of the players Atlanta has acquired from Europe during their prime years. He has played in the Champions League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 while accumulating nearly 100 appearances for his national team.
