Chelsea sends the former Atlanta United Homegrown back to the Championship on a season-long loan.
Caleb Wiley looks to rebuild at Preston North End
Former Atlanta United Homegrown Caleb Wiley has joined Preston North End on loan from Chelsea for the remainder of the 2026-27 season. Neither club disclosed a loan fee, and the announcements did not include an option for Preston to purchase him.
Wiley returns to the English Championship, where he previously played during two loans with Watford. More importantly, the move gives him another opportunity to put together the extended run of first-team soccer which injuries have prevented since he left Atlanta two years ago. The minute that I was told that Preston was interested, I was instantly, excited for this opportunity, and I'm I'm glad to to be here and to get things rolling. Two Difficult Years
Chelsea acquired Wiley from Atlanta United in July 2024 for a reported $11 million. He signed a six-year contract with Chelsea that included an option for an additional season. Chelsea sent him to RC Strasbourg in France, another club controlled by Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership group, for the 2024-25 season.
His introduction to European soccer was repeatedly interrupted. Wiley made six Ligue 1 appearances for Strasbourg while dealing with knee trouble during the first half of the season. He then dislocated his shoulder during a November match against Nice, which required surgery. The operation kept him out for more than two months. Chelsea recalled him from Strasbourg in February and moved him to Watford, where he made 10 Championship appearances before the end of the season. Eight of those appearances were starts.
Watford brought Wiley back on another season-long loan in July 2025. Wiley made five league appearances before an injury removed him from the team in October. Chelsea terminated the loan in January so that he could continue his rehabilitation at the club’s training facility.
As a result, he has played only 21 league matches in Europe since leaving Atlanta. Wiley simply has not remained healthy long enough to establish himself. This next season for me is just getting consistent minutes. I've been out the last year due to injuries and I just want to make sure that this year is about getting back into rhythm, getting back to my old self, playing freely, playing pain-free, and enjoying the game again. Preston North End
Preston is located in Lancashire in northwest England. The city sits approximately 27 miles northwest of Manchester, 26 miles northeast of Liverpool and 15 miles east of Blackpool. It has a population of approximately 148,000, comparable in size to Savannah.
The club plays at Deepdale, which has hosted Preston matches since 1878 and is recognized as one of the oldest continuously used professional soccer grounds in the world. The current stadium seats 23,404 and includes stands named for figures from the club’s history, including Preston and England great Sir Tom Finney.
Wiley cited that history as part of Preston’s appeal. His conversation with manager Paul Heckingbottom appears to have been more important. It's a very historical club. I had a great conversation with the manager the other day. He explained clearly about the things that he wants for me, the things that this team can achieve this season. Preston has spent the past 11 seasons in the Championship. Heckingbottom’s team narrowly avoided relegation in 2024-25 before improving dramatically during the first half of last season. Preston climbed as high as fourth while playing committed defensive soccer and attacking quickly after winning possession. Its form eventually faded, and the club finished 14th.
Preston has opened the new season with consecutive league defeats. It lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers before falling 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Deepdale. Everton also eliminated Preston from the League Cup with a 4-0 victory Wednesday.
Preston has started the current Championship season in a 4-2-3-1 rather than its previous 3-5-2. Veteran defender Andrew Hughes started at left back against Bolton and Wolves. Thierry Small, Preston’s primary left wing-back last season, missed much of preseason through injury. He came off the bench against Wolves and started farther forward in the League Cup match against Everton.
Andrija Vukčević provides another option at left back. The Montenegro international has made only one substitute appearance in the league this season, although he started against Everton.
Wiley will therefore enter a competition for spots. Hughes offers experience and can also play as a left-sided centerback. Small is an established attacking option, while Vukčević gives Heckingbottom additional depth.

He doesn’t join Preston as an immediate starter. In Preston’s current 4-2-3-1, he can challenge Hughes at left back or play farther forward, as Small did against Everton. If Heckingbottom returns to the 3-5-2 he used last season, Wiley can move into the left wing-back position. As a player, you know, very attacking minded left fullback, left wing back. His availability remains the first question. Wiley’s introductory interview indicated that he is approaching his return, but it stopped short of confirming that he is ready to start Preston’s next match. I'm so ready. I mean, it's been too long. Every every day I'm just thinking about the first the first game back. What Comes Next
Wiley will wear No. 12 for Preston. His comments suggest Preston may continue building his fitness before placing him in the lineup.
Preston will face Charlton Athletic this weekend before hosting Bristol City on Tuesday and Blackburn Rovers four days later. The club then visits Watford on September 8, giving Wiley a possible return to Vicarage Road less than two weeks after joining his new club.
Chelsea has not indicated whether it sees Wiley eventually competing for its first team, and Preston does not have a publicly disclosed option to keep him beyond this season. Wiley first needs something he has rarely achieved since leaving Atlanta, which is an uninterrupted run of games.
At Preston, he will have an opportunity to earn it.
