Atlanta trades its longest-tenured field player to Portland for up to $150,000 in GAM
Atlanta United trades longtime defender Ronald Hernández
Atlanta United traded Ronald Hernández to the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, ending more than five years with the club and the longest continuous tenure of any field player on Atlanta’s first-team roster. Portland will send Atlanta $50,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money. Atlanta can receive another $100,000 in 2027 GAM if Hernández reaches performance and roster-based incentives.
Heinze, Valentino, Pineda, Deila, Martino. Ronald Hernández played for them all. Hernández arrived while Josef Martínez, Miles Robinson, and Ezequiel Barco were part of the core of the team. He shared the pitch with Guzan, Walkes, Bello, Wiley, Araújo, Almada, and remained long enough to see Miguel Almirón return to the club.
Hernández was one of those players whose value was easier to understand from watching him than from reading his statistics. He was Atlanta’s bulldog.
Hernández fought and bled for the team. He chased down every ball, played through contact, and never gave up on a play. He played just as hard whether he was starting regularly, coming off the bench, or trying to earn his way back into the lineup.
As with every player, there were better players during his five-plus years in Atlanta. There were players who started more often and players who had larger roles with the team. Hernández kept finding a place because he defended with intensity, accepted whatever role he was given and competed every time he stepped onto the pitch.
Atlanta brought Hernández back in January after initially declining his contract option following the 2025 season. His new agreement ran through 2026 with a club option for 2027. Tomás Jacob joined the first team, while Matt Edwards worked his way into his share of the minutes. Hernández remained available but spent much of the second half of the season watching from the bench.
The Timbers have been hit by injuries at right back. Brandon Bye tore the ACL in his left knee and underwent surgery that will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Juan Mosquera is also out for 8-10 months after multiple surgeries.
Portland general manager Ned Grabavoy pointed directly to those injuries when announcing the trade. Ronald gives us another option at right back where we have experienced some unfortunate injuries this summer. His experience and familiarity with MLS should have him available and ready to compete for involvement within our squad. We look forward to welcoming him and his family to Portland. Portland have an immediate need and offers Hernández an opportunity for consistent starting minutes. Something which has been hard to come by in Atlanta.
One of the moments I will remember came after a match, when Hernández’s daughter spotted me from a distance and waved goodbye. It was a small interaction, but it is part of why Hernández’s departure feels different from most roster moves. After more than five years, he was not simply another player passing through Atlanta.
