ATLANTA UNITED 2 CLINCHES A PLAYOFF BERTH!

Starting Lineup

For the first time ever, Atlanta United 2 has a playoff match to prepare for. Atlanta defeated Orlando City B 4-2 at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee on Sunday to secure its place in the postseason.

On Decision Day 2025, Atlanta traveled to Chattanooga with the same opportunity. José Silva was still the interim head coach then. Santiago Pita scored early to claim the lead, but Chattanooga equalized and won the ensuing shootout. Atlanta missed out in heartbreaking fashion.

This time, Atlanta entered its 28th and final regular-season match with 45 points, 13 regulation wins, and a plus-14 goal differential. Only a loss by more than 10 goals, combined with several other results, could have eliminated Atlanta. A win or draw was enough.

The team suffered a heavy defeat last time out, which Silva called a “bad day at the office”. Silva changed only one starter. Ignacio Suarez-Couri replaced Pita as the attacking midfielder.

Two ATLUTD2 players also had records within reach. Arif Kovac led MLS NEXT Pro with 19 goals, while Cameron Dunbar shared the league lead with 11 assists.

All eight Eastern Conference matches began at the same time. Atlanta started the day in sixth, and Orlando occupied eighth with 44 points. Philadelphia Union II, Connecticut United, and Huntsville City were also trying to secure postseason spots.

1st Half

Within the first three minutes, Andrew Jardines won a second ball in Orlando’s half and dribbled forward. He supplied Cameron Dunbar on the left. Dunbar hit a one-touch cross into the center. Arif Kovac charged through and tapped the ball into the net from inches away.

It was the first goal scored across all eight Eastern Conference matches. Kovac extended his league lead with his 20th goal, while Dunbar moved ahead in the Golden Playmaker race with his 12th assist. Their combination lifted Atlanta from sixth to third in the live standings and dropped Orlando from eighth to ninth.

Atlanta created two more chances during the next few minutes. Kovac found D.D. Sibrian inside the box, but Orlando blocked his shot. Jardines then sent another low cross towards Kovac, whose attempt was saved by Himes.

Kovac sat down off the ball requiring treatment. The replay showed an awkward bump from Parker Amoo-Mensah. He briefly left the field before returning.

Fifteen minutes after Atlanta’s opener, Parker Amoo-Mensah found Gustavo Caraballo, who sent Issah Haruna racing into space down the right. Haruna reached the side of the box and slowed in front of Dominik Chong Qui. He waited for options, took a few touches to size up the defender, then drove a shot from the outside of his left foot through a tight angle.

Orlando was level, and Atlanta fell back to sixth in the live standings.

The match stayed open after the equalizer. Atlanta created two dangerous attacks through Dovlo, Dunbar, and Chong Qui, while Orlando had a couple of chances.

Atlanta won a corner in the 30th minute. Dunbar curled the delivery towards the center of the six-yard box, where Himes came forward and attempted to punch it away, but sent the ball into the back of Harvey Sarajian. It then bounced backwards into the net.

Atlanta was back in third place, but Orlando pushed for another equalizer after the hydration break. Caraballo megged an Atlanta defender and won a free kick. His delivery reached Nolan Miller at the back post, but Miller could not direct it towards goal. Mohamed Cisset blocked an attempt from Clovis Archange, and Senanou stopped Sarajian’s shot from outside the box.

In the 40th, Jardines again found Dunbar on the left. Cameron dribbled into the penalty area. He reached the goal line before cutting a back pass to Suarez-Couri, who opened his body and guided the ball beyond Himes.

The goal gave Atlanta a 3-1 lead. It was Suarez-Couri’s second of the season and Dunbar’s second assist of the game. Dunbar moved to 13 assists, took sole possession of the league lead, and tied the MLS NEXT Pro single-season record.

During first-half stoppage time, Sarajian spun away from Senanou in midfield. Senanou challenged for the ball, but the referee called a foul and showed him a yellow. Atlanta protested because Senanou appeared to make contact with the ball before bringing down Sarajian.

Orlando restarted play and kept the attack moving. Haruna and Justin Hylton combined on the right before Hylton received the return pass inside the box. His shot deflected off Chong Qui, and beat Ransom to reduce Atlanta’s lead to 3-2.

Silva continued protesting the decision and was booked for dissent. Jardines was cautioned for dissent as the teams left the pitch at halftime.

2nd Half

Orlando pushed forward when the second half began. News soon arrived that Huntsville had taken the lead over Red Bull New York II. The result dropped Orlando out of the playoff places and made an equalizer even more important.

Senanou blocked Sarajian’s attempt from the center of the box, then Mohamed Cisset stopped Pedro Leão from further out. Hylton found space on the right and drove a shot towards Ransom. The ball bounced awkwardly in front of the Atlanta captain, but he reacted quickly and knocked it away. It was a big save.

At the hour mark, Haruna skipped past his marker and drove a low shot wide. He fell awkwardly after shooting and landed on an Atlanta midfielder’s leg, but was able to continue.

Haruna attacked again a minute later and got past Cisset, who tugged at his shirt. He received a yellow card for the foul. Senanou had already been booked, leaving both Atlanta center backs to defend the final half-hour with cautions.

Silva replaced Suarez-Couri and Sibrian with Pita and Josh Kwon giving Atlanta fresh legs in midfield.

In the 63rd minute, Ransom launched a long ball towards the left wing. Parker Amoo-Mensah tried to clear it but missed, allowing Chong Qui to get the ball in stride. He was in on a one-on-two. Chong Qui cut into the penalty box and made a fake. He sent Okonski to the ground. Himes came off his line. Chong Qui waited for the goalkeeper to open his stance before slipping the ball between his legs.

The cheeky finish was Chong Qui’s third goal of the season, and it restored Atlanta’s two-goal advantage. Orlando now needed two goals to save its season.

With seven minutes remaining, Haruna skipped past Chong Qui and drove towards the end line. Chong Qui brought him down and received a yellow.

Silva then brought on Amir Henry for Chong Qui, and Seyi Fakiyesi came on for Jardines.

Caraballo sent the resulting free kick towards the back post. Nolan Miller headed the ball down against the post. Atlanta escaped.

Huntsville’s 2-1 victory became final during stoppage time. Orlando had approximately two minutes remaining to find the two goals it needed.

Caraballo curled a shot towards goal from outside the box, but Ransom made the save. The Atlanta captain reacted again when Brady Kendall turned another attempt towards goal from inside the box. Atlanta survived Orlando’s final push and carried the ball away from its end.

Silva tried to send Caio Assis on for Kovac in the fifth minute of stoppage time. However, Kovac did not leave the field quickly enough. Play restarted with Assis still waiting on the sideline. The final whistle arrived before he could enter.

Closing Thoughts

In the end, Atlanta completed the regular season with a 14-9-5 record and 48 points. It climbed from sixth to third on Decision Day, while Orlando fell from eighth to 10th and was eliminated.

Silva told the broadcast before the match that Atlanta was treating the afternoon as its first playoff game. His team answered the 4-1 loss in Chattanooga with four goals and a road victory.

Arif Kovac’s 20th goal moved him two ahead of Alex Kreil during Decision Day. He finished the afternoon leading the Golden Boot race and tied for the second-most goals in a single MLS NEXT Pro season.

Cameron Dunbar finished the regular season with 13 assists. His two against Orlando moved him into the lead for the Golden Playmaker award and tied the MLS NEXT Pro single-season record.

The top-three finish gives Atlanta the right to select its first playoff opponent. It can choose the seventh-place team or the winner of the play-in match between the eighth and ninth place teams.

Atlanta will make that selection on Sept. 23rd. The club will then host the first playoff match in its history on Oct. 18.
