Atlanta United adds Paulo Díaz as defensive rebuild continues
Atlanta United added another veteran defender Tuesday, announcing the signing of Chilean center back Paulo Díaz from River Plate.
Díaz joins on a free transfer and is signed through the 2027-28 season, with club options for 2028-29 and 2029-30. He will occupy an international roster spot pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P-1 visa. Paulo is a player who will bring toughness, competition and a winning mentality to our group. He’s a center back who has a good feel for the game and understands the moments to be aggressive or hold the line defensively. He brings great experience at the club and international level and fits the style that we want to play at Atlanta United. We’re excited to welcome him to Atlanta. Díaz arrives after seven seasons with River, where he played more than 200 official matches, won domestic trophies, and spent much of his time in one of South America’s most demanding club environments. The 31-year-old is right-footed, primarily a center back, and has played on both sides of a central pairing. He has also been used at right back, giving Atlanta another defender who can compete for minutes in more than one role.
The signing comes during a summer in which Atlanta’s defensive picture has changed quickly. Juan Berrocal’s loan has ended, sending him back to Getafe, and Atlanta has also signed Paraguayan center back Junior Alonso. If both moves are completed, Atlanta would be adding two veteran South American defenders to the same position group in the same window.
Díaz’s River Plate exit had been building before the move became official. The Argentine club left him out of its preseason trip to Alicante and placed him among the players who would remain in Argentina to train separately. Argentine reporting said Eduardo Coudet no longer planned to use him, and TyC Sports reported that a mutual contract termination would allow River to save the money owed through the end of Díaz’s deal.
Germán García Grova later reported for Bolavip Argentina that the termination was made easier because Díaz already had a long-term agreement with Atlanta United. Doug Roberson reported in early July that Atlanta’s pursuit of Díaz was trending toward completion.
Atlanta has changed coaches, changed executives, and now appears to be changing the spine of the back line. Díaz brings River Plate experience, more than 50 appearances for Chile, and a level of seniority Atlanta has needed in central defense. The club still has to turn those additions into a working partnership, and center back pairings require timing, communication, and trust.
Atlanta United entered the summer window needing defensive help, and Díaz gives the club another senior center back as it tries to rebuild that part of the team during the season.
