Arif Kovac Linked With Move to Sweden
Subheadline: Nearly two months after Kalmar FF expressed interest, a new report suggests Atlanta United 2’s leading scorer could move to Europe in January.
Teaser: Swedish interest in Arif Kovac first surfaced in August. After a 20-goal season and the MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot, another report has raised questions about his future in Atlanta.
Arif Kovac’s 20th goal of the season came just three minutes into Atlanta United 2’s final regular-season match against Orlando City B. Cameron Dunbar sent a cross through the penalty area, and Kovac tapped it home at the far post. The goal helped Atlanta secure a 4-2 victory, its first MLS NEXT Pro playoff berth, and the Golden Boot for its leading scorer.
It may also have been his final regular-season appearance for Atlanta United 2.
In August, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported that Kalmar FF was working to sign Kovac, although no agreement had been reached. More recently, Bosnian outlet SportSport.ba suggested that a move to Sweden could take place during the January transfer window. Atlanta United declined to comment when asked about the reported transfer interest.
Kovac’s performances this year have certainly given European clubs reason to take notice. The 20-year-old finished the regular season with 23 goal contributions in 26 appearances and earned a place in the MLS NEXT Pro Best XI. His five-goal performance against Huntsville City FC in May set an MLS NEXT Pro single-match scoring record. He also made his MLS debut against Philadelphia Union in August.
His future in Atlanta remains unclear. Kovac has ATLUTD2’s first post-season match ahead of him when Atlanta hosts CT United FC on Friday, October 16.
